RAPE victims should be encouraged to apply for the compulsory HIV testing of alleged rapists, the Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities said yesterday.

RAPE victims should be encouraged to apply for the compulsory HIV testing of alleged rapists, the Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities said yesterday.

"Rape survivors should fully utilise the provisions of the Sexual Offences Amendment Act. They have a right to ASK FOR compulsory HIV testing of an alleged offender," Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya said at an event in Durban to mark 16 Days of Activism Campaign on No Violence Against Women and Children.

She said there was a need to acknowledge the link between violence and the spread of HIV infection in South Africa as the country builds up to World Aids Day tomorrow. - Sapa
