RDP HOUSES CON ARTIST ARRESTED
A CONMAN exposed by Sowetan and e.tv for selling RDP houses has finally been arrested .
On Friday a shell-shocked Bafana Madilongwe covered his face with his cap and remained mum when confronted outside the Germiston police station holding cells about his arrest.
After evading the long arm of the law for four months Madilongwe, aka Bafana Ntuli, was arrested last Wednesday by the Germiston branch of the commercial crimes unit and appeared in the Alberton magistrate's court on Friday on fraud and theft charges.
He was remanded and will apply for bail this week.
Madilongwe, who identified himself to his victims as Bafana Ntuli, went underground after the exposé.
Madilongwe was caught on spy camera "selling" an RDP house to this reporter in July.
At the time of his alleged illegal dealings Madilongwe was working as a messenger for Arengo 6, a company contracted to the Gauteng housing department to build RDP houses in the province. He has since been dismissed.
Inspector Thabo Mahlangu said Madilongwe was arrested at 2am while sleeping at his house in Vosloorus last Wednesday.
"He is facing fraud and theft charges," he said.
Gauteng housing MEC Kgaogelo Lekgoro said: "It's great news that he was not granted bail."
Lekgoro warned all other would-be conmen to desist from their illegal activities.
"We want to caution other people who might be thinking of defrauding the state that they will be uncovered and brought to book," he said.
"We have arrested other people who thought they could sell RDP houses meant for the poor."
The police have requested people who might have been defrauded by Madilongwe to contact the commercial crimes unit.
