A SECURITY guard at a school in Limpopo recently lost his left eye when a driver ferrying pupils to the school sjamboked him without provocation.
Now the school, which he had served for eight years, is refusing to sign an accident report.
Socks Mbombi, a security guard at Holy Rosary Junior Primary School in Malamulele, was sjamboked on his forehead by pensioner Obert Mabasa.
The incident happened on August 9 after Mabasa went to the school before 6am and ordered Mbombi to open the gate.
Mbombi said he was not allowed to open the gate at that time and asked Mabasa to talk to school management. But Mabasa started beating him.
Two weeks ago Mabasa was convicted of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and sentenced to R15000 or 12 months imprisonment by the Malamulele magistrate's court.
Magistrate Daniel Maluleke said he took into consideration that Mabasa was remorseful, that he had undertaken to compensate Mbombi with an amount of R6000 and that he had helped him to get an artificial eye.
Mbombi said he had approached his employers with accident forms to sign but they have refused.
"It is a Christian school and I am shocked that they are refusing to recognise that the whole thing happened at my place of employment."
His lawyer, Kevin Maluleke, said he was assisting Mbombi to lodge a claim in the compensation commissioner's office."We are experiencing challenges because they are refusing to sign the forms.
"It is an offence for an employer to fail to report any accident within seven days to the compensation commissioner in terms of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act of 1993," he said.
The principal of the school, Lidia Elizabeth Castro Gomez, refused to comment.
