THE department of roads and transport in Limpopo has announced that it will revitalise only the roads leading to schools, health centres and workplaces that were damaged by the recent rains.
This was said by MEC Pinkie Kekana during an imbizo at the Seleteng sports grounds in the Mphahlele area outside Lebowakgomo on Wednesday.
The area is one of the worst affected districts, with roads that were damaged by torrential downpours last week.
The aftermath of the rains has almost brought business to a standstill, while schools were disrupted because roads were not accessible.
Addressing villagers this week Kekana said during this financial year the government would only fix roads leading to areas where service delivery was happening.
"The department is particularly concerned about reports that since last week hundreds of commuters in Ntotokwane, Lesetsi, Marulaneng and Tjiane have been trapped in their homes, unable to go to work or to school because the roads have become streams.
"I am also told that some of these roads are showing signs of poor workmanship despite the fact that they are still under construction.
"I have instructed the roads maintenance unit to attend to these matters urgently and to develop an improvement plan for sustainability and quality assurance of our roads," Kekana said.
