KWAZULU-NATAL has become the first province to appoint a Broad-Based Black Economic (BBBEE) Advisory Council.
The provincial department of economic development and tourism yesterday announced that it had completed its nomination process for people to serve on the council.
The move is a National Strategy for BBBEE that provides for the establishment of advisory councils at both national and provincial levels.
Provincial MEC for economic development Mike Mabuyakhulu said the national minister for trade and industry was responsible for the establishment of such councils at national level.
"At provincial level the responsibility is vested in the MECs for economic development and tourism," he said.
The provincial advisory council consists of 19 members who will hold the office for three-year term.
Members nominated are from various sectors, including organised labour, business, women and youth.
Mabuyakhulu said the council would advise Premier Zweli Mkhize on the achievements of BBBEE in the province, on the establishment of Sector and Enterprise Charters, on the implementation of BBBEE code and good practice and new proposed strategies in order to achieve BBBEE.
Mabuyakhulu said Mkhize would from time to time co-opt and or bring in new members to the advisory council in order to add value.
He also revealed that the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) has finally received the operator permit from the department of trade and industries.
