Upington hosts U-17 tourney

THE 19th edition of the South African Football Association Under-17 Championships will be played in Upington, Northern Cape, from December 1 to 6.

THE 19th edition of the South African Football Association Under-17 Championships will be played in Upington, Northern Cape, from December 1 to 6.

Safa deputy president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana said all nine provinces and a schools' national side will take part in this tournament.

"We will also have a team from the South African Schools Football Association, we are serious about developing the game," Nonkonyana said.

He also warned Safa teams and the SA Football Supporters Association to ensure that all the players who will take part in the tournament are of the correct age.

"We are working closely with the department of education to help us root out cheating in our junior competitions. We are getting information about the participants from the schools."

Safa technical director Serame "Rhee" Letsoaka said they wanted to groom the boys who will be in Upington for the 2016 Olympic Games.

"We are using this tournament as part of our long-term development plan - we will select impressive players to form part of our team for the 2016 Olympics."

Safa competitions director Belebetse Monnakgotla said the matches would be played at Paballo and Danie Kuys stadiums.
