Still no relief

WE GATHER from those who crunch the numbers that the recession is technically over. How we wish we could celebrate the news.

WE GATHER from those who crunch the numbers that the recession is technically over. How we wish we could celebrate the news.

It has nothing to do with our being addicted to misery but a recession or a boom is felt by its effects rather than the change of the plus sign and its replacement with a minus.

While we see the light at the end of the long tunnel there are still far too many South Africans who live in a permanent recession to start celebrating a quarter of growth.

In the same way that we were not comforted by the then minister in the treasury Trevor Manuel's reassurances that we were not "technically" in a recession despite our seeing hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost, we cannot start celebrating until we see the numbers that matter the most - formerly unemployed people getting jobs.
