KWAZULU-NATAL Premier Zweli Mkhize yesterday launched the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for no Violence Against Women and Children in Estcourt.

KWAZULU-NATAL Premier Zweli Mkhize yesterday launched the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for no Violence Against Women and Children in Estcourt.

He led the provincial government in the initiative, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Mkhize said: "To fight evil you need a few brave people to stand up. One voice can make a difference. This is one way to encourage everyone to stand up and eliminate crime."

This year's theme is "Don't look away, act against abuse".

The government aims to make society aware of interventions in the fight against crime and abuse through various programmes that will benefit communities.

A team of eight activists also began a 600km walk in support of the campaign that will end on December 10 in Port Shepstone.

The team will be joined by community members where they pass through as a sign of support of the initiative.

Other activities during the campaign will include an abstinence festival to be held in Pietermaritzburg, a peace march in Durban, an anti-domestic violence, human trafficking and child abuse march in Richmond.

Provincial chairperson of the community policing board Jabulani Sibisi said they were pleased to be part of the campaign.

"It's shocking to realise that most people who abuse children are those that are close to them.

"If all South Africans can participate in such campaigns we can curb these devious acts."
