AJAX Cape Town threw away two points at home after playing to a goalless draw against Free State Stars in an Absa Premiership match at Wellington's Boland Stadium yesterday.

The Cape side were on top for most of the game, but some poor option-taking and slack execution saw them fail to convert their superiority into goals.

Stars had the first chance of the match but Matome Madimabe pulled a 12-yard effort wide.

Former Stars striker Diyo Sibisi had the opportunity to put the home side ahead in the 14th minute, but went just wide with an angled effort.

The Urban Warriors continued to dominate, but Thulani Serero and George Maluleke wasted chances in the 17th and 19th minutes with weak efforts, while in the 24th minute, an off-form Franklin Cale failed to make the most of a slip in defence by Sipho Nkosi.

Three minutes before the break the visiting team, coached by former Ajax mentor Gordon Igesund, had a rare chance when Sthembiso Ngcobo nodded the ball down for Tebelo Mofokeng. Veteran Ajax goalie Hans Vonk intercepted just in time.

Stars enjoyed a brief spell on top after the restart.

However, Ajax were soon back on the attack, with Sifiso Vilakazi missing a 60th-minute header and then wasting an even better chance 10 minutes later when he failed to control Cale's pinpoint delivery.

The Free Staters did have a couple of chances later on in the game, but Aleni Lebyane headed wide of an empty goal after Vonk was found wanting, while Mpho Makola blasted over the bar after a weak header in defence from Derek Decamps. - Sapa
