The residents had been living in dangerous conditions after their RDP houses started cracking because of heavy rains.
This will be a temporary measure, though, since the department said it would fix the cracks on the houses and then allow the occupants to return.
Departmental spokesperson Clayson Monyela said yesterday the government was in the process of verifying the identities of people whose houses have been affected.
He said the residents would be accommodated in other houses that had been completed in the area.
The residents had been subjected to risky living conditions because their houses were built on a wetland.
The residents started moving into the houses two years ago, and some said the houses already had cracks when they moved in.
They said they had informed the Polokwane municipality about the "mess" but have had no positive response.
"We have decided to be proactive to ensure that people live under safe conditions," Monyela said.
"We have been made aware of the problems and feel we need to intervene to ensure that residents live happily."
According to Monyela the process of moving people would start as soon as the verification process had been completed.
He said this would be done to ensure that occupants were the rightful owners of the houses.
"We have had a meeting with residents and have agreed that we need to move with speed to rectify the mistakes on the houses before any life could be lost.
"I also want to emphasise that not all people will be moved as not all the houses are affected by the problems."
Monyela said 13 of the families had indicated that they want to be moved permanently and did not want to return to those houses.
After the people had been moved the department would work hand in hand with the Polokwane municipality in addressing the issue of the drainage system, he said.
