Sowetan has learnt that representatives of the two sides have been in discussion with Celtic about the transfer.
Phunya SeleSele chief executive Ikie Augousti confirmed yesterday that negotiations with Pirates were at an advanced stage.
In terms of the proposed deal Mayambela will move to Parktown, with Tlou "Shuffle" Segolela moving to Bloemfontein.
Segolela and Excellent Walaza are on loan at Celtic for the rest of the season.
The new deal does not include Walaza.
Augousti said Mayambela's transfer is expected to be finalised in the next two days, with Pirates most likely to sign him.
Mayambela bid farewell to Siwelele during the Free State derby in Namahadi on Sunday, where he threw his jersey and boots into the crowd.
He is also said to have told his teammates that the match was his last with them.
Attempts to get hold of Mayambela last night were unsuccessful, but a source close to the player and Celtic confirmed he will join Pirates.
"The deal between Pirates and Celtic is done, it's just a matter of Pirates coming down to Bloemfontein to negotiate the terms with the player," he said.
Mickey Modisane, Pirates' publicist, said: "At the moment Orlando Pirates have not signed or released any player. We will make an announcement once there are changes."
Sundowns are also said to be chasing red-hot Nigerian striker Prince Olomu of Celtic, but the two clubs have denied this .
