Premier pledges help in wake of rainstorms

THE body of a schoolgirl who drowned in a river during a rainstorm that hit KwaZulu-Natal last week was found floating at the weekend.

Sibongile Ngcobo, 14, of the South Coast was washed away when she tried to cross the flooded river on her way to school on Thursday.

Police yesterday confirmed that two people had died due to the rainstorm.

Yesterday families left homeless in the wake of heavy rains accompanied by gale force winds were still picking up the pieces to rebuild their homes.

Premier Zweli Mkhize assured the victims that the government would help them rebuild their homes.

"We will ensure that the victims get food, tents and blankets," he said.

The damage has spread along the coast from the South Coast right up to the north of Durban.

Several houses in eThekwini's Umlazi, KwaDabeka, KwaNdengezi, Drummond and the Glebelands informal settlements were blown away.

Houses in Mzingazi, Madlankala in Richards Bay and Ndwedwe under the Ilembe district municipality on the North Coast, and Umkhomazi and Hibberdene on the South Coast were badly affected.

MEC for local government and traditional affairs Nomsa Dube said teams from the disaster management unit were still in the areas to assist people.
