Vundla ends years of awards boycott

SABC flagship soap opera Generationsproducer Mfundi Vundla, pictured, has now abandoned his controversial boycott of the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

SABC flagship soap opera Generationsproducer Mfundi Vundla, pictured, has now abandoned his controversial boycott of the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

Generations' strong showing, as announced in Johannesburg on Wednesday, seems to have prompted his change of heart.

The daily soapie got four nominations in the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories.

"Yes, we have engaged in dialogue with Saftas organisers, and we are satisfied the awards are now being run with integrity. So we decided to take part this year," said Mark Graham, Generations artistic director.

This ends many years of Vundla's boycott of the awards, which will take place at the State Theatre in Pretoria in February.
