THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has called for the immediate resignation of Amajuba district municipality mayor Mkhulu Mlangeni.
The call comes after the ANC's landslide victory in Wednesday's by-elections.
The ANC won all four by-elections, which the party described as "reminiscent of recent general elections".
Of the four, three were under the control of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said: "In keeping up the momentum of the recent elections the ANC continued making inroads in areas previously seen as IFP strongholds by winning their ward in KwaMbonambi.
"This is proof that the IFP is now clearly a spent force. The joy in Wednesday's by-elections is that we are now in control of all wards in Madadeni, which is the largest township in the Amajuba district."
Zikalala said the by-election results meant that the ANC was now in a position to govern Newcastle municipality without going into any coalition.
"The IFP must now eat humble pie and obey the will of the people by calling on its mayor to resign from the council."
IFP provincial secretary Bonginkosi Buthelezi said: "The ANC must stop shouting from the mountain tops and trying to use any act to oust the mayor. They will not succeed."
But Buthelezi was quick to point out that there were internal problems that the party would have to look at.
But he did not elaborate on them.
