Frelimo fingered in graft

MOZAMBIQUE - Testimony in the most high-level corruption trial in Mozambique's history has implicated ruling party Frelimo as a beneficiary of embezzled funds, independent media reported yesterday.

MOZAMBIQUE - Testimony in the most high-level corruption trial in Mozambique's history has implicated ruling party Frelimo as a beneficiary of embezzled funds, independent media reported yesterday.

Former Mozambican airports company finance director Antenor Pereira, a defendant in the trial, testified that Frelimo had received some of the nearly R12,8 million allegedly stolen from the company, O Pais said.

"The ex-finance director of the company Airports of Mozambique confirmed in court that part of the money embezzled from the company went to the renovation of the Frelimo School," the newspaper said.

Frelimo, which in polls last month cemented its rule of Mozambique since independence in 1975, runs a school near Maputo where it holds conventions, training events and political seminars.

O Pais said testimony at the trial indicated Frelimo had received R188626 from airport officials in allegedly embezzled funds.
