ATHLETES want more of say in the running of the sport after the takeover of ASA by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

Top athletes will state their case in Pretoria tomorrow.

"We have been having meetings as elite athletes to strategise and we want to have more voice on the board of ASA," said a top athlete, who asked not to be named. "On the suspended ASA board we (athletes) had only one representative, Hendrick Mokganyetsi."

Mokganyetsi has since resigned.

The source spoke about the possible return of former ASA chief executive Banele Sindani but Sindani recently told Sowetan he had no interest in going back to athletics. Sowetan can also reveal that Wilfred Daniels, who quit the ASA over the Caster Semenya saga, is set to return to the board. Hendrick Ramaala, Geraldine Pillay (retired), Hezekiel Sepeng and Ruben Ramolefi are some of the athletes lobbied to serve on the interim board. Sepeng has launched a scathing attack on Stanley Itshegetseng, who is being lobbied to serve as interim president of ASA.

"It is disgusting, the manner in which people are positioning themselves for ASA positions without a mandate from the athletes themselves," Sepeng said.

"It is my view that people like Ramaala, Geraldine, Shadrack Hoff, Xolile Yawa, Chris Harmse and Elana Meyer can lead athletics, not old administrators."

Itshegetseng said: "We need to be careful not to be seen to be divided. We agree there is a need for a change in terms of running the sport, including Sepeng."
