Sowetan has learnt that Itshegetseng enjoys strong support and is well placed to lead the interim structure that will be put together by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), which suspended the ASA board over its handling of the Caster Semenya gender verification tests.
Also lobbied to lead the interim board is internationally renowned marathoner Hendrick Ramaala, who is a lawyer by profession.
Ramaala has refused to comment on the latest developments, saying there was a structure in athletics dealing with all the issues relating to the sport.
"For now, Stanley and Hendrick are the two main people who are in the race to lead the new ASA interim board that administrator Ray Mali is working hard to put together with the cooperation of the 17 ASA provinces," said a source close to the process.
Itshegetseng confirmed to Sowetan yesterday that he had been approached by some of the stakeholders in the sport to be part of the effort to repair the image of the ASA, led by Sascoc board member Mali.
"It is true that there are people who have approached me not only to make myself available for the interim board but to lead it as president.
"I don't have a problem with that as long as it will be a democratic process in which the provinces will vote," he said.
"I can't turn my back when my country needs my expertise. I have been involved in athletics as an administrator for a very long time in Soweto, Gauteng and nationally in various developmental aspects."
