CELEBRITIES and socialites in all their finery got red-carpet treatment at a classy shindig atVillamoura in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The beautiful people of Gauteng had gathered at one of the best restaurants around to dig deep in their pockets for charity.

Carmen Fisher and George Georgas, her fiancée, who were the hosts, looked like they had leapt straight from the pages of a glossy magazine. In real life, she looks even more stunning than she appears in Rhythm City, from which she recently left for the greener pastures of Villa Rosa.

Besides, they make a stunning couple, and unless my ears are deceiving me, I can hear a faint but definite tinkling of wedding bells.

The night was, however, about raising funds for Big Shoes Foundation, an organisation that has taken on the onerous task of looking after 25 homes for the HIV-positive in Gauteng. "They also look after HIV orphans, their medical and palliative need," Fisher says.

"Captains of the ships Karen and Luke Lamprecht are spreading their wings to Durban soon. After five years in the field, they have just realised how essential and needed their services are."

Fisher says she met the couple through her website. "They phoned me wanting to know if there was common ground to work together. I shortlisted them. But after much consideration, I chose them because I felt they were contributing to an extraordinary cause," she says.

The result was the magnificent fundraiser at Villamore that drew a raft of celebrities and personalities.

"We were so grateful to have acquired the items that were up for auction, like a Torres signed photograph, Muhammad Ali signed trunks, Pele signed jersey, Cristiano Ronaldo signed Manchester United display, a Macheda signed photo, a JJ Schoeman dress that was worn by singer Amore Vittoni, a hamper of EMI CDs, as well as a two-night stay at any of the Southern Sun hotels worth R10000."

While not all the items were sold, the few that were fetched more than R35000.

"There is no denying times are hard, the economic meltdown has affected us all. People were cautious but we left R35000 richer and I'm happy and grateful for that."

Nonhlanhla and Tshepo Mdluli blew the roof off, each doing their individual set and then several duets.

If their upcoming offerings are a taste of what we saw, then we are in for some great festive moments.

The surprise of the evening was O'Ryan Winter, the singer, and Kenton on guitar.

Jason Greer, of All Access, was abrilliant compere.

I finally I got to see a black auctioneer - TK Bako - and the man is good.
