MEMBERS of the portfolio committee on sport and recreation are expected to severely criticise Sascoc in Parliament today over its handling of Athletics SA's suspension.

Committee chairperson Butana Komphela said yesterday: "We know they played a role in discrediting Leonard (Chuene, suspended ASA president).

"We want them to talk to us about the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the whole issue around the ASA.

"Furthermore, it was also wrong for them to suspend ASA employees. We will tell them that they are part of the problems at ASA.

"We know for a fact that when ASA was going for election they played a role in using certain individuals and the media to tarnish Leonard's image."

But, the Department of Sport and Recreation last week issued a statement in support of Sascoc for suspending ASA. A top athletics administrator said: "We know they want someone from Eastern Cape to run the ASA, but what surprises us is that (Sport Minister Makhenkesi ) Stofile still has to comment on the matter.

"The minister and Sascoc are not saying anything about the problems in soccer with regard to Safa elections, but they were quick to deal with the ASA."

Sascoc will not appear before Parliament alone - Boxing South Africa and SA Drug Free Institute will also appear. "It is clear that things are not fine at BSA, there are a lot of problems in the sport," Komphela said of Boxing South Africa.
