Nigeria's Super Eagles beat Kenya's Harambee Stars 3-2 in Nairobi, and with the help of Mozambique, who beat Tunisia 1-0, the African football superpower has taken its place among the qualifying nations competing in the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Obafemi Martins was the man of the moment after scoring a brace in Saturday's match at the Kasarani Stadium in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
"We are honoured to have this giant of African football in the World Cup. With their history, tradition and popularity in South Africa they will be a major addition to the tournament and we welcome their qualification," said 2010 LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan.
"As we have seen from the three Fifa tournaments already held in Africa this year it is the African teams that are winning," he said.
"I am confident Nigeria has a good chance in 2010 and they will certainly feel the full support of South Africans in the tournament."
Nigeria made their first appearance in the finals in the US in 1994, where they made it past the first round at the first attempt, and they went on to take part in the 1998 and 2002 tournaments.
The team lost to Angola for a place at the most recent edition of the Fifa World Cup and securing their spot for 2010 will hopefully make up for the disappointment of missing out on the 2006 World Cup in Germany. - Sapa
