First for Chiefs, Santos

HISTORY will be made on Friday when the first Absa Premiership match is played at the new Nelson Mandela Sports Complex.

The match, which marks the start of the second round, pits high-riding Santos against inconsistent Kaizer Chiefs at this 2010 Fifa World Cup match venue. Kickoff is at 8pm.

The People's Team have registered the spanking new venue as their alternative home base and this means soccer enthusiasts in Port Elizabeth will have another opportunity to watch top flight football in their area.

They began the season without a Premiership club after Bay United were relegated to the National First Division at the end of the season. But Umlilo have shown the gumption to reclaim their Premiership status at the end of the season.

The venue hosted the international friendly between Bafana Bafana and Japan, which ended in a goalless draw on Saturday.

Santos coach Boebie "Mzala" Solomons said yesterday that they wanted to maintain their winning rhythm to stay in the hunt for the championship title.

Santos hammered Maritzburg United 4-0 in their last game, which resulted in coach Gordon Igesund resigning. Igesund has since joined Free State Stars.

Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung said: "We have been playing well but the problem is that we are not scoring goals.

"It was a relief to win 1-0 against Free State Stars in our last game and we are out to make it two in a row at the expense of Santos. It won't be easy because Santos are on top of their game but we are ready for them."

Tickets for the game are available at Computicket and Shoprite-Checkers stores at R20 for adults.
