This was announced yesterday by Jacques Grobbelaar of Stadium Management South Africa, the company managing the Soweto sports facility.
The Gauteng department of sports, arts, culture and recreation, under MEC Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mtimkulu, is also highly involved in this project.
"We are working on the establishment of a soccer museum, it's an exciting development because Orlando Stadium has a rich history of South African soccer," Grobbelaar said.
"We've already identified the space where the museum will be located. The plan is to make Orlando part of the Greater Johannesburg tourism footpath.
"The museum will also help create job opportunities for the local community because tourists will visit the stadium when they tour Soweto."
Local Organising Committee chairperson Irvin Khoza said it was important for the history of South African soccer to be recorded.
Grobbelaar said they were now having tours by school children and other members of the community to the 40000-seater stadium.
The museum will not only feature soccer in Orlando and Soweto in general, but the history of the beautiful game in South Africa.
In addition, they are also planning to feature video footage of South African games, including those in which some of the local greats played.
The greats include Patrick "Ace" Ntsoelengoe, Jomo Sono, Kaizer Motaung, MacDonald "Rhee" Skhosana, Moran "Samora" Khulu, Jingles "Baba ka Sbongile" Perreira, Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba, Joel "Ace" Mnini, Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe, Trott Moloto, , Mlungisi "Professor" Ngubane, Calvin "Michael Jackson" Petersen, Stuart "Phenduka" Lilley, Rodney "Stumbo" Charles, Sullie "Bum Jive" Bhamjee, Khulu Sibiya and Cedric "Sugar Ray" Xulu.
With the 2010 Fifa World Cup coming to South Africa, there will also be an exhibition on tourism in Soweto and the legacy projects.
