Kwena Chiefs rule at Sun City

A FLURRY of goals by striker Maimela Jiki shortly after half time was the cushion the Kwena Chiefs of Botswana were looking for when claiming the winners' trophy in a six-a-side soccer tournament held at Sun City in Rustenburg on Saturday

Attracting 16 teams from the southern African region, the final turned into a lopsided affair since the boys from Botswana never let Gauteng's Momentum Life get a sniff in the game with their well-drilled defence, coupled with a slick attack.

Chiefs were full of confidence, having claimed a runners-up spot recently in Swaziland.

Older, stronger and more experienced, Chiefs kept possession of the ball and frustrated the less experienced opposition.

Going into the half-time break with a solitary goal by Savio Thekiso - after a mad scramble in the goalmouth - it was still anyone's game.

Whatever Chiefs captain Brino Moolosi told his team during the half-time break worked wonders since the fleet-footed Jiki scored three consecutive goals in the space of five minutes.

His second goal, from 30m out, left the opposition and spectators in silence as it curved into the top left corner of the net.

A late goal five minutes from the end by Moolosi was the final nail in the coffin in a game played in sauna-like conditions.

In the ladies' final Royal Bafokeng claimed top spot after a penalty shootout win against Green Lightening. They triumphed 2-0.
