MATTERS turned for the worse on Saturday for embattled Athletics South Africa as the Athletics Gauteng North board resigned, giving a vote of no confidence in the federation.

The board stepped down after a special meeting in Pretoria.

Long-time administrator Daan du Toit and three other temporary members have been appointed to look after AGN board matters until elections can be held.

AGN joined the Eastern Province, Western Province, Boland and Free State athletics associations in officially denouncing the federation's board, which, along with members of senior management, was suspended by South Africa's Olympic body last week for its handling of the Caster Semenya gender controversy.

Central Gauteng Athletics had also scheduled to meet on Saturday afternoon, but their special general meeting has been postponed until 6pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Olympic body on Saturday said Sascoc board member Ray Mali would take over Athletics South Africa's administration from today.

This restructuring comes as suspended ASA president Leonard Chuene faces the boot from his office in Houghton.

After a meeting on Saturday, Sascoc said Mali would form an interim board to govern and regulate athletics in South Africa as the sport's embattled federation - which is reported to be heavily in debt - faces an entire restructuring and possible extinction. - Sapa
