Ex-mayor stays in custody as case postponed

EMBATTLED former eNdumeni mayor Thandeka Nukani was yesterday remanded in custody by the Utrecht magistrate's court.

EMBATTLED former eNdumeni mayor Thandeka Nukani was yesterday remanded in custody by the Utrecht magistrate's court.

Nukani, Bongani Shangase and Peter Khumalo face an attempted murder charge after they allegedly tried to bribe an inmate at Waterval Prison to murder her nephew, Siyabonga Nukani.

Siyabonga, who is serving a 20-year jail term for his role in the murder of Girshen Bujram in 2007, has turned state witness in the case against Nukani and her co-accused.

Bujram was investigating the sale of low-cost government houses by senior officials for between R700 and R3000 when he was killed.

Shangase, who was Nukani's boyfriend, is serving a life sentence for Bujram's murder, while Nukani will appear in the Ladysmith high court next year for the same case.

Shangase will also go on trial for the murder of councillor Peter Nxele.

The three will appear in court again on November 25 on the attempted murder charge.
