SHARKS have a reputation as being destructive animals that attack almost anything, but the number of shark attacks is not as high as many people think. Here are some more facts about sharks:

Sharks do not have any bones in their bodies; they have a skeleton made up of cartilage (the tough, flexible tissue that makes up human ears and noses).

Sharks have very good hearing; they can hear a fish moving in the water from as far as 500m away.

A pup (baby shark) is born ready to take care of itself.

The mother shark leaves the pup to fend for itself and the pup usually makes a fast getaway before the mother tries to eat it.
