ANC task team to help end varsity tension

THE EMPANGENI ANC leadership has formed a special task team to find an amicable way of ending the conflict between student bodies at the University of Zululand.

THE EMPANGENI ANC leadership has formed a special task team to find an amicable way of ending the conflict between student bodies at the University of Zululand.

ANC regional secretary Thulani Mashaba said the party took a resolution to help resolve the issues that affected the university.

He said the ANC appointed a five- member team to look into the causes of uncertainty at the campus every year.

"We are not going to interfere with the internal processes or legal issues but we want to play a part in ensuring that there is no instability at the university," Mashaba said.

He said management had failed to come up with strategies to bring about stability on the campus.

"It's a known fact that every year when there are student representative council (SRC) elections violence erupts," he said

Angry students went on the rampage torching several buildings, including the library, computer labs, and two lecture halls.

This happened after their meeting with dean of students Mandla Hlongwane, who had indicated that there would be no time to hold SRC elections this year.

Tension prevailed after the SRC elections in October.

The ANC-aligned South African Students Congress were declared winners of the SRC election after the IFP-aligned South African Democratic Students Movement failed to submit its candidates list on time and was disqualified.
