Khabonina to sizzle in new series

THINGS are really looking up for professional dancer, singer and actress Khabonina Qubeka.

Qubeka, who launched her television career as superbitch Doobsie on Muvhango, has landed another powerful role in the new SABC2 drama series The Mating Game.

The drama series is currently being filmed in Joburg. It is a story about the lives of three women struggling with motherhood, love and friendship.

Produced by Anita Khanna and Debbie Strumpha, the series will hit the small screen next April.

With a line-up that includes Renate Stuurman, Elma Postma, Thato Nkosi, Justin Strydom, Nathaniel Ramabulana, Elphas Khulu Skenjana and Meme Ditshego, the series promises to sizzle.

Qubeka, who has been cast repeatedly in similar roles, does not mind the latest challenge.

"Call it type-casting, but I am enjoying it. I am still finding my roles in this field," she said.

"I play Kefilwe Ndlovu, a magazine editor. She is a powerful woman who is power-hungry. Viewers will fall in love with the character. There is a softer side that people will see in her."

She said playing the powerful roles had taught her a lot about people. "I have learned that if you see someone angry or behaving strangely there is something deep inside that is making them to behave that way."

Qubeka had tongues wagging about her role in The Lab and Rhythm City. On stage she has done Richard Loring's African Footprint.

An accomplished dancer and choreographer, she released her first single, Gama Lakho, last month.
