TWO police officers based at the Giyani police station appeared briefly in the local magistrate's court on a charge of murder.

Constables Percy Chauke and Matimba Khosa were arrested for allegedly assaulting Sikheto Vincent Mudaka of N'wamakena village outside Giyani on Monday.

Mudaka was allegedly left for dead after the incident.

According to his neighbour, Mkhacani Mathebula, Mudaka was rushed to the nearby Khensani Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.

Mudaka was allegedly accused of having an affair with a local woman whose children did not approve of the relationship.

The children had allegedly told the policemen to tell Mudaka to terminate the relationship. But instead the officers chose to discipline him by assaulting him.

The officers allegedly drove Mudaka in a police van to the bushes where they assaulted him. Mathebula said they first heard Mudaka screaming and went to investigate.

But they would not do a thing as they realised the police were present. It was at about 10pm.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Ronel Otto said they would await a decision from the director for public prosecutions before taking any action against the perpetrators.

The two were refused bail yesterday and their case was postponed to November 17 for a formal bail application.
