IT'S official! Orlando Pirates captain Benson "Mayanga" Mhlongo's season is over.

Bucs spokesperson Mickey Modisane confirmed this after days of uncertainty about the player's serious knee injury, which he sustained in the match against AmaZulu at Chatsworth Stadium on October 28.

"Unfortunately Benson has been ruled out for the rest of the season. He is recuperating at home and is obviously upset about the news and understandably so," Modisane said.

"But he has also taken solace from the knowledge that players who will come in for him in his absence will do the job. His injury is a big blow for us but we have other capable players."

Modisane said that as a professional footballer, Mhlongo had accepted his predicament.

He said the player would start his rehabilitation later this year or early next year, but could not commit on the midfeld hardman's chances of featuring in the World Cup. Mhlongo was not available for comment but told his club's website: "Obviously I'm devastated by the news that I will be out of action for the entire season.

"There is absolutely nothing that I can do to change this situation."
