The man, from Rustenburg, reported that his Renault was stolen while parked in a yard on August 16. He claimed that he discovered the theft when he returned home.
North West police head of communications and liaison services Senior Superintendent Kebaakae Metsi yesterday confirmed the man's arrest and said he would appear in court on a charge of perjury on November 13.
She said the man allegedly sold his car to an unidentified person and then reported it stolen.
Metsi said the man, accompanied by another person, went to the same police station in Rustenburg where "this person claimed to have bought the vehicle of the suspect from another man".
He also claimed that the person who sold him the vehicle had referred him to the 51-year-old owner of the car to collect the registrationdocuments of the vehicle.
Metsi added that the alleged buyer claimed to have been in possession of the vehicle since May this year and not August, the month the owner claimed it was stolen.
The actual owner of the car allegedly made another statement to the police in which he admitted having falsely reported the vehicle stolen in order get it back.
