SIPHO "Tsunami" Taliwe fulfilled his wish to become the first South African champion from Aliwal North by defeating Jasper "Jazzman" Seroka in Lenasia last Friday.

SIPHO "Tsunami" Taliwe fulfilled his wish to become the first South African champion from Aliwal North by defeating Jasper "Jazzman" Seroka in Lenasia last Friday.

Judges scored the fight - Amos Lusenga and Sazi Xamlashe 116-112 while Tony Nyangiwe had it 116-113.

Taliwe did not disappoint the about 45000 people of Aliwal North, between Orange River, Free State and the Eastern Cape.

Seroka of Namakgale, Limpopo, who was hoping to make the second defence of his title, turned the fight into an energy sapping clash.

Seroka brought the hall to raptures in round four when he threw every punch in the book. Though most of his smartly executed blows hit the target, they could not stop Taliwe from coming forward.

Taliwe was the bull that kept coming forward while Seroka was the matador. He moved side-to-side but sometimes back pedalled as the pressure became too much.

Taliwe almost registered two knock downs in rounds seven and eight. He staggered Seroka with a looping right in round seven and lifted him off the ground with a right uppercut in round eight.

Seroka, the sleek mover with quick hands, was not at his best. His work rate was below par but his left jab was at work throughout the night.

It closed Taliwe's right eye in round five and almost did the same to the other.

Earlier, Ronald Parks won the Gauteng provincial junior flyweight belt after a 10 round stoppage of Funisani Manta.

Monta collapsed and was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital where he was admitted but is reported to be out out of danger.

Other results: Flyweight 4 rounds - Siyabonga Mashila beat Xolani Lekhuleni on points; Junior lightweight four - Mpho Babe beat Gcobani Nkabi on points and Junior welterweight six - Luyana Jako drew against Ntuthuko Memela.
