Cops seize R40 000 dagga and arrest two

A TIP-OFF by members of the public led the Tshwane Metro Police to arrest two men and confiscate about 50kg of dagga with a street value of more than R40000 from a house in Mamelodi, Pretoria.

A TIP-OFF by members of the public led the Tshwane Metro Police to arrest two men and confiscate about 50kg of dagga with a street value of more than R40000 from a house in Mamelodi, Pretoria.

Saturday's bust followed calls by community members during an imbizo by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa two weeks ago.

According to Console Tleane of the City of Tshwane department of community safety residents called on metro police to conduct more operations in the township following numerous successes, particularly in schools.

About the weekend bust Tleane said the police acted on a tip-off about a 34-year-old man selling "nyaope" - a concoction of low-grade cocaine and dagga - in the township.

"The suspect led police to a house in Lusaka Section, Mamelodi East, where he purchased the dagga.

At the house a 36-year-old man was arrested for the possession of six bags of dagga weighing 48,9kg with a street value of more than R40000," he said.

The two men were charged with possession of illicit drugs and are expected to appear in court soon.

Tleane commended members of the public for reporting illegal activities, including about people dealing in drugs within the community.

He said tip-offs from the community "will be treated with confidentiality".

Community members with any information can contact Tshwane metro police on 08001111556 or can call their nearest police station or Crime Stop number 08600 10111 all hours.
