Arrows inflict more pain on Downs coach

LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows secured their only third win of the season when they beat star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Saturday.

Abafana Bes'thende looked determined from the start as they attacked the visitors' half within the opening three minutes and full-of-running striker, Richard Henyekane nearly put his side ahead early in the game when he fancied a 20-yard shot, which was saved by keeper Brian "Spiderman" Baloyi.

Sundowns had several good chances to score in the first half with the first clear cut opportunity presenting itself in the 15th minute when an attempted shot on goal by Bafana Bafana forward Katlego Mphela went across the goal-mouth.

The MTN 8 Cup champions though went ahead on the 26th minute when midfielder Musa Bilankulu was left unmarked inside the box and headed home beautifully from a corner taken by Henyekane.

On the 35th minute Mphela had another fine chance to level matters but squandered the opportunity and, of course, Arrows keeper Thulasizwe Khuzwayo was grateful.

The second half started much as the first, but this time, it was the visitors who were searching for an equaliser with a chance falling on Mabhuti Khenyeza. But his attempt went wide, while at the other end of the field Nhlanhla Zothwane did the same for the home team.

Arrows should have put the game beyond doubt in the 75th minute when Henyekane played a beautiful pass to Njabulo Manqana. But the left-footed midfielder's attempt was off target. Two minutes later Sundowns captain Esrom Nyandoro forced a fantastic save from Khuzwayo.

In Coetzenburg, also on Saturday, Santos went amok when they hammered Gordon Igesund's Maritzburg United.

Phikolethu Spelman and Ryan Chapman each scored a brace to give Santos a deserved 4-0 win.
