Woman gets suspended sentence for murder

A 28-YEAR-OLD Boksburg woman was yesterday given a suspended sentence for burning the father of her child to death.

A 28-YEAR-OLD Boksburg woman was yesterday given a suspended sentence for burning the father of her child to death.

Winnie Khumalo was sentenced to 10 years, wholly suspended, for killing Thompson Nyirenda, who had kidnapped their three-month-old baby.

Khumalo's co-accused, Thapelo Molefe, 38, chairperson of the Vosloorus community policing forum, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Johannesburg high court.

On the day he was murdered Nyirenda had "confessed" to killing the baby and selling its body parts.

Speaking to Sowetan after sentencing, Khumalo said she believed her child, who would now be three years old, was still alive.

"I just want my child back," she said. "I contacted Nyirenda's family in Malawi, but they would not give me a straight answer.

"If he has killed my baby I want the remains so I can bury him."

Khumalo said she gave birth to her child with Nyirenda in June 2007.

He had kidnapped the child three months later after they had separated .
