Mboweni bows out with joy

WITH today his last working day, outgoing Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni took time to "connect" with the community of Noordgesig, just outside of Soweto.

Mboweni sat and chatted to a church congregation and young people yesterday.

He was at a sod-turning ceremony at Noordgesig's St Andrew's Catholic Church.

The ceremony marked the start of construction of a multipurpose centre, sponsored by the Reserve Bank.

He quoted a verse in the Bible, which says "trees will shout with joy", to which he likened his "joyful" retirement.

Mboweni said: "I retire with joy and being let out in peace."

Reverend Teboho Matseke said the centre would cater for communities in and around Noordgesig, Pennyville and Orlando East.

Referring to the project, Mboweni said: "If you invest R1 into Sandton, the results will not show.

"But if you do the same in a place like Noordgesig, the results will be big in the long term."
