DAMELIN students have joined in the community building initiatives by helping to raise funds for a charity organisation of their choice.

DAMELIN students have joined in the community building initiatives by helping to raise funds for a charity organisation of their choice.

It is part of their studies.

They roped in Mama Angel to donate 180 school bags for children at the Ithembelihle LSEN School in Primrose.

This is a special school for children who are wheelchair-bound, use Zimmers, are without certain limbs and have other special needs. It caters for pupils from Grades 1 to 7.

Under the short programme in conference, exhibition and event management at the Damelin School of Leisure and Lifestyle, the students select a charity of their choice every four months as part of their practical training.

As part of the fundraising venture the students organised a talent show and fun day for the children and the community of Germiston last week.

"It was a beautiful party with lots of people. Everyone enjoyed themselves," said Sowetan photographer Bongani Mnguni, who represented Mama Angel at the function.

"There were Zulu and Sotho dances and wheelchair ballroom dancing. There was a magician to thrill the youngsters."

Christina Kruger, the team leader, said they chose Ithembelihle because of its central geographic location.

"Many people do not know about the school and it does not receive much in the way of donations," Kruger said. "The 10 people in our group wanted the school to be seen and known.

"We raised R10000 as a group and the school will use it to build a therapy and wellness centre."

She said they had enjoyed their practicals while helping the school at the same time.

The school still needs cutlery, pots and pans, food, toys and disposable nappies, among other things.
