MORE than 10 people were seriously injured when the driver of a bus in which they were travelling lost control and the vehicle plunged into a gorge in Mpumalanga yesterday.

The Great North Transport bus was travelling from Acornhoek to Bushbuckridge when the accident happened on the R40 road between Dwarsloop and Casteel at about 6am.

The female bus driver was among the injured passengers who were rushed to the Mapulaneng Hospital in Bushbuckridge.

"I was too scared when I heard people screaming for help, said Ntombi Nzima, a passenger who was on her way to work at time of the accident.

"Suddenly the bus went down the gorge but luckily it did not go deeper or we might all have been killed in that accident."

She said nobody seemed to know what the cause of the accident was.

The accident happened on the same road where two trucks collided late last year, killing 25 people and injuring scores of others.

The provincial department of public works, roads and transport said it would issue a statement about theaccident but had not done so by late yesterday.
