The controversial Blackburn Rovers attacker has been drafted into the Bafana squad for the international friendlies against Japan and Jamaica this month.
The squad will be announced by Bafana assistant coaches Pitso Mosimane and Jairo Leal today in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Also returning to Bafana is Spain-based defender Nasief Morris, who was dropped by former coach Joel Santana on the eve of the Fifa Confederations Cup for disciplinary reasons.
McCarthy, who is not playing regularly at Ewood Park, has not been part of Bafana for more than a year after he was discarded by Santana for his tendency to snub national call-ups.
Santana might have lacked technical and tactical nous, but he received rave reviews from the soccer fraternity when he overlooked McCarthy for selection.
The former Bafana coach was also praised for giving Morris the boot after the Racing Santander defender failed to arrive on time for camp.
McCarthy's return, under the recalled Carlos Alberto Parreira, will not come as a surprise to many soccer fans considering that it was the 1994 World Cup-winning coach who convinced the Bafana all-time leading goal-scorer to return to international football.
Parreira, who recently renewed ties with Bafana, is expected to arrive in the country this morning.
He will not hold a press conference today, but is expected to meet the new Safa leadership later in the day.
He will address the media in Johannesburg tomorrow.
Katlego Mphela, Siboniso Gaxa, MacBeth Sibaya, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Tsepo Masilela are also expected to be named in the squad.
The players were selected by Mosimane and Leal in consultation with Parreira, who is still familiar with them.
The Brazilian has been given a pool of players and he will decide the final 24 for the two encounters.
The preparations for the game against Japan, scheduled for Port Elizabeth on November 14, start on Monday.
The Jamaica clash takes place in Bloemfontein on November 17.
