IN TRYING to give exposure to and develop the talent of young visual artists, Kizo Gallery in Durban will stage a huge art exhibition.
Titled Ithala Ubuciko Open Category, the exhibition will take place at the Kizo Gallery in Durban. Supported by Ithala Bank, the project is aimed at uncovering fresh and raw talent and developed it.
The exhibition features young promising visual artists such as Thabani Hlela, Thubelihle Hlela, Sbusiso Mbokazi, Thabani Dlamini, Xolani Cebekhulu, Mandla Khuzwayo and many more.
The exhibition is part of the Ithala Poster Competition, an initiative that began 13 year ago. Nathi Gumede, head curator of the Kizo Gallery, says Ithala usually go around KwaZulu-Natal recruiting young visual artists.
"This year scores of art works from young artists and art students from the ages of six to 18 participated. Those who are older than 19 entered in the open category. It is in this category that 10 artists were selected by a panel of expects in the field."
Gumede says the selected artists were commissioned to make an artwork inspired by South Africa's hosting of the 2010 World Cup.
"The artists were provided with materials and given time to complete their works," Gumede says.
"They participated in a workshop by Themba Shibase, a lecturer at the Durban University of Technology. "
Gumede says the project is aimed at providing financial and developmental solutions to previously disadvantaged communities.
The competition is aimed at giving students the opportunity to realise that their talent can be recognised and given a platform. to grow.
