SOUTH Africa's unsung heroes in the food security campaign will be honoured during the 15th yearly Nestlé Community Nutrition Awards in Johannesburg on Friday.

These awards recognise mostly women-led cooperatives and schools-based food gardens that have ensured food security for their families, schools and communities.

Organised in partnership with international women empowerment organisation Soroptimist International and the Government Communication Information System, the awards cater for entrants implementing practical programmes tackling malnutrition within the communities.

Winners receive cash prizes and project development mentoring tips.
