SOWETO Television might have started operating on a bad note but the community station seems to have found a winning formula.

SOWETO Television might have started operating on a bad note but the community station seems to have found a winning formula.

Formed in 2007, it has increased its viewership figures. The latest amp figures viewership shows that the station has more than amillion on the terrestrial platform and 805000 on channel 150 on DSTV.

Situated in the famous Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, the station has done well despite the challenges of operating with minimum resources.

The quality of the programmes that were under harsh scrutiny when the channel began are improving by each day.

The new figures show that people from Soweto found a home at the channel. Programmes vary from the popular Dlala Ngeringas youth shows every afternoon, news, movies, current affairs, lifestyle and documentaries.

The channel boasts veterans such as Nimrod Nkosi, Dr Love aka Mveleli Gqwede and Mathews Moloi.

Executive producer Elize Viljoen says Soweto Television gives people a chance to meet their favourite musicians and sports stars and catch up with the pillars of the Soweto society.

Viljoen says the strategy to ask the viewers if they are happy or not about programming has worked.

"For most viewers, the fact that they get acknowledged through their own local TV station is what they appreciate the most. Although still in a fledgling stage, Soweto TV has come a very long way since its initial one month licensing stints."

She adds that Soweto TV is not only an important youth development initiative, but it provides a voice for the voiceless, thereby promoting democracy and community spirit in Soweto.

If you do not live in Soweto, you can access Soweto TV on channel 150 on DSTV.
