tso Vilakazi to the rescue for downs

FORGOTTEN Benedict "Tso" Vilakazi has bounced back in typical fashion.

FORGOTTEN Benedict "Tso" Vilakazi has bounced back in typical fashion.

Relegated to the stands by Mamelodi Sundowns, and indicating his unhappiness in news reports, Vilakazi came in yesterday when Sundowns were locked in a 1-1 draw with Jomo Cosmos.

It was his first appearance in many moons and the diminutive midfielder changed the complexion of this Absa Premiership clash at Super Stadium in Atteridgeville minutes after his introduction.

Vilakazi came in for Papi Zothwane and scored the Brazilians' second goal in the 59th minute.

"Little Napoleon" used cat-like reflexes to pounce and punish a defensive blunder by Cosmos.

The goal, and Tso, inspired Downs' spirited second- half performance. They suddenly looked a different team after trailing early on.

Ezenkosi started off the much better side. They took the lead in the fifth minute through Daniel Gaberone, who was fed by Bamuza Sono.

The goal sparked Downs back to life. They nearly levelled matters but Esrom Nyandoro's trademark thunderbolt went over the bar.

Their best chance came in the 22nd minute when leading goalscorer Katlego Mphela turned beautifully in the box but his final touch let him down. Seven minutes later Mabhudi Khenyeza ballooned another chance over the bar.

Sundowns continued with the attack at the restart of the second half. Their hard work paid dividends 10 minutes into the half when Mphela tapped home a beautiful cross from Lebohang Mokoena.

Another late substitute, Siyabonga Ngubane, who came in for Khenyeza, put the final nail in the Cosmos coffin. Cosmos' misery continued when Ousmane Berthe was given a red card after a second booking.
