A TEACHER who has seen a copy of her death certificate after Home Affairs certified her dead says she is "traumatised" by the bungle.
Emilly Mavunda of Giyani Section E in Limpopo, a teacher at a local primary school, Vurhonga, says she is "confused and shattered".
"Who sees her own death certificate?" she asked, as she showed us the offending document. It says she died on July 12 this year in Germiston of natural causes.
Mavunda says her ordeal started in September this year when she received more money than usual when she was paid her salary.
When she enquired about it she found that her group scheme had not deducted any money because she was presumed dead.
"When I went to the Old Mutual Group Scheme to find out why no deductions were made, they said they were paid up.
"When I asked what this meant I was told it meant that the owner was dead," she said.
She said the insurance company asked her to open a case with the police, which she did.
What she did not know was that she would not be paid by the department of education this month.
Giyani police spokesperson in Inspector Thomas Makhubele confirmed that a case of fraud has been opened.
He said since the supposed death happened in Germiston, the case was transferred to a police station there.
Makhubele refused to give further information about the case, saying it was still under investigation.
Education department spokesperson Ndo Mangala said the matter would be investigated and corrected.
Home Affairs spokesperson Sam Moremi said he was not aware of the incident and would investigate.
