THE Johannesburg Metro Police Department and Emergency Management Services has honoured members who died in the line of duty.
The ceremony was held at the Liberty Church in Ferndale, Johannesburg, on Friday.
Phumzile Mokgetle said being a firefighter was a calling because "when people run out you, have to run in".
"You have to be very brave."
JMPD chief Chris Ngcobo said: "Our officers must learn from these brave people who do not complain about overtime and money but dedicate themselves to serving their communities."
Ngcobo said the first JMPD member to die on duty was a Sergeant A Setshedi.
"When he was asked to retire because he was in his 50s, Setshedi said police officers die on the road - and he died did indeed on the road," Ngcobo said.
Setshedi was killed by a taxi driver in Orlando, Soweto.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) chief Ntombi Gule said: "We believe this seed will grow and be embraced nationally."
Gule also hailed 11-year-old Cochise Jones of Kensington as a hero for saving two-year-old Ayanda from drowning last month.
Tebogo Tleane and Patrick Matlhe, who were rescued by EMS members from an underground pipe in Cosmo City, presented the department with a certificate to thank them for saving their lives.
