PRELIMINARY investigations indicate that a quarrel between a pupil and peers from hiscommunity led to a stabbing at a Durban school on Tuesday.
This was said by the KwaZulu-Natal department of education yesterday.
The department said the pupil, of Overport Secondary School, was the victim of a gangster squabble that was taking place in his community.
School authorities yesterday rejected reports that the wounded pupil was in a critical condition at a local hospital.
The Grade 10 pupil was stabbed twice in the back on the school premises by attackers who fled the scene. The three attackers, who are outsiders, had jumped over the school fence trying to rob the boy.
"The pupil is not in a critical condition. He is just under an exploratory investigation but he is fine as he is in a general ward.
"Everything at the school is also under control and the process of final examinations taking place currently is not affected," said principal Shabier Omar.
Mbali Thusi, department of education spokesperson, said they had found that the matter was a gang fight in the boy's residential area. "There are two groups fighting in the area and one group consists of non-scholars."
