POLOKWANE municipality in Limpopo has received a qualified audit report highlighting that millions of rands were unaccounted for.

The auditor-general found, among other things, that R20million meant for municipal infrastructure disappeared within a period of 15 days in the year ended June 2007.

The money was received from national Treasury on June 15 2007, but 15 days later it was nowhere to be found. No explanation was provided.

According to the AG's report dated October 22, a lot of graft was taking place in the municipality. This makes things difficult for the AG to determine the destination of the money.

The report noted that the municipality had not established a "generally recognised accounting practice compliance" asset register and that, owing to inadequate asset registers, the items on the registers could not be linked to the categories and asset types as per accounting policy. The AG, therefore, was unable to verify the accuracy of depreciation for the year 2005 of R57,2million.

The report also noted that the records did not permit the application of alternative procedures regarding property, plant and equipment.

Municipal spokesperson Simon Mokoatedi said the R20million which was not accounted for did not reflect because it had not been receipted at the financial year closure. New Vision Party councillor Ngwako Setjie yesterday called for heads to roll.
