Two mineworkers killed in rockfall

TWO mineworkers were killed at Harmony Gold Mining's Target mine in Free State yesterday in a rockfall accident.

TWO mineworkers were killed at Harmony Gold Mining's Target mine in Free State yesterday in a rockfall accident.

Harmony, the world's fifth biggest gold producer and third largest in Africa, said in a statement the company did not know how many other workers had been affected, but rescue operations were under way.

Earlier, the company said four workers had been trapped underground.

The company's spokesperson Esha Brijmohan said she could not confirm whether production at the mine was continuing or not.

Lesiba Seshoka, spokesperson for the National Union of Mineworkers, said the union was "very disappointed" by employers who let workers "die recklessly".

He said the NUM would make sure that the law enforcement agencies took the issue seriously.

"There is a notion that a mineworker's life is worthless, forgetting that these two who are deceased left behind 20 dependents," he said.

"We will ensure that the department and prosecuting authorities take the matter seriously," Seshoka said. - Sapa and Kea Modimoeng
