Poor kids drown because they have no pools

LAST week another tragedy happened - another child drowned. You might wonder why I am not surprised - and will never be.

LAST week another tragedy happened - another child drowned. You might wonder why I am not surprised - and will never be.

Every year a child drowns. It can be in Soweto, Eldorado Park or wherever. The bottom line is that all these accidents happen in poor neighbourhoods.

In case you're wondering why ... it's because we don't have swimming pools as amenities or for extramural activity, or a school subject. A decent swimming pool can cost up to R15 000.

This is not much compared with the lives of our children.

A minister's car costs R1100000 and if you do the math you will get about 73 swimming pools out of that amount.
