Failure to get school post led to murder

A FORMER acting principal at a Witbank, Mpumalanga, high school has been arrested for last week's murder of the local circuit manager.

Isaac Magugu Mlambo, 42, former acting principal at Kopanong High School and Themba Bongani Xulu, 35, were arrested last week for the murder of Isaac Mohale Matsoabane, 59, the Witbank circuit manager.

Matsoabane was shot six times, allegedly by Xulu, 35 - a hitman allegedly hired by Mlambo.

Both men appeared in the Witbank magistrate's court yesterday and were not asked to plead. Their case was postponed to November 2 2009 for possible bail applications.

According to Captain Leonard Hlathi of the Mpumalanga provincial organised crime unit, Mlambo applied for the vacant post and allegedly performed poorly during interviews. He did not get the post.

"Mlambo concluded that Matsoabane was the reason he did not get the post. He sought the services of Xulu to eliminate Matsoabane. He apparently allegedly promised him R25000 for the murder of the circuit manager," he said.

Hlathi said the two men had already confessed before a magistrate that "Mlambo was the mastermind behind the killing of Matsoabane last week."

According to Hlathi, Matsoabane was relaxing in his car reading a newspaper when the hitman shot him six times and disappeared.

"Matsoabane had six bullet wounds to his body," Hlathi said.

Attempts to get comment from the Mpumalanga department of education were unsuccessful.
